Released in 1999 the Ragtime Black is often referred to as the Ragtime III. No longer in production, the Ragtime Black is the 3rd non-LE Ragtime released by Visconti. The fountain pen hosts a simple black cap with the famous Ragtime clip. The clip’s imprints are slightly deeper or larger than earlier Ragtime clips making the imprints stand out on the Rhodium (or is it Palladium?) plating. The cap includes a beautiful etched band in the same plating. A subtle guilloche pattern adorns the barrel. The Ragtime Black is a piston filling fountain pen with a steel nib. There is a clear ink window above the section. The cap and body are made of Lucite. The piston knob is hidden under the removable blind cap. While the blind cap in the photo below is unadorned, note that the Ragtime Black has been seen with a metal band at the piston knob. (Please see the photo posted on FPN to see pen with metal band.) Smaller than the older celluloid Ragtimes the Black is roughly the size and weight of a Pelikan 400. The Ragtime Black weighs 18 grams inked and 10 grams without the cap. The closed pen is about 12.7cm in length. (An original Ragtime I is about 14cm in length closed.) Uncapped the Black is 11.4cm and if posted it is approx. 15.2cm.
The Other Black Ragtime
There is a second black Ragtime which was released in 2000: the Ragtime Medici. Although released a year later, the Medici is often referred to as a Ragtime III possibly because the Black and the Medici are seen together in the Visconti Museum. Both the Black and Medici are made of Lucite and both are piston filling pens. As of this posting, Ragtime IIIs are the only Ragtimes with ink windows and with silver-tone nibs, clips and bands. The Medici has ornate deep etchings in the pen barrel and cap. The clip is intricately engraved. The blind cap hides a metal piston knob. There is a clear ink window above the section, and the nib is 14K (although there have been reports of steel nibs). Photographs of both the Ragtime Black and the Ragtime Medici are found in an FPN Visconti Ragtime post. Another good Medici photo is available here.
